Cities With Rights

Today, 17 jurisdictions allow immigrants to legally vote in local elections: ten towns in Maryland (sine the 1990s); three towns in Vermont (2021-23); San Francisco (2016) and Oakland CA (2022); New York City (2021) and Washington D.C. (2023).

[Note: NYC’s law was
struck down in court in 2024, pending a possible appeal; D.C.’s law survived a challenged in court in 2024, when a federal court sustained D.C.’s noncitizen immigrant voting rights law.
